Looking ahead

Advent is not so far away. And one of the most popular of Cheryl's songs, Come, Messiah, Come, is written for use during Advent. This song is a seasonal invocation. Based on Old and New Testament texts, it welcomes the Messiah and acknowledges the glory that Jesus relinquished to become Emmanuel for us.

Profile

Though music appreciation has been a lifelong interest, songwriting is a relatively recent focus in my life. Growing up, I enjoyed singing in the junior choir at church, and as an adult I have been a member of various choirs, ensembles and music teams. As a result, voice is the primary instrument I use when composing songs, although I do work out the chords on the keyboard.

The process of songwriting has been very fulfilling to me, in great measure because it blends so many important components of my life—the love of music, the crafting of words, the study of Scripture, even the detail-oriented parts of music notation—and all the while, I can try out various versions of each song as I take my daily walk around the neighborhood! We currently live in Plantation, Florida where my husband, Brad, is a chaplain at Covenant Living of Florida. We have two sons: Kirk lives in Amsterdam and works for Samasource. Kent, who works for the US Commerce Department, is married to Sam. They live in Washington DC and are the parents of our grandson. Our daughter Betsy is a post-doc researcher at a lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Between each section, there is time for silent reflection and meditation, and the extinguishing of another candle. As appropriate, it can also be meaningful to supplement the silence with drama, dance, homily or instrumental music.

This song of confession is written with the following format in mind: Verse 1 and Verse 2 are sung congregationally, slowly and penitently. Then, while the instruments alone play the verse again (as necessary), the congregation reads the confession of the day and the pastor speaks the words of assurance of forgiveness. After the words of assurance, the tempo of the song changes (measure 12) and the congregation comes in joyfully on the Chorus, repeats the Chorus, and ends with the Tag.

And, with the psalmist, our earnest plea is that our own words and thoughts would also bring glory to God.

Songwriters' Retreat

I've just returned from the Worship Songwriters' Retreat @ Mt Hermon. What a tremendous event--I am so glad I was able to go. It was put on by the good folks @ Integrity (who demonstrated that they truly want to serve the local church, even within the context of promoting their resources); it was well-organized, worshipful, informational, inspirational. The professional musicians who presented workshops and led worship were refreshingly honest and humble, while being dynamic and, at times, a complete crack-up (Paul Baloche in particular). My assessment is that they take their call seriously, but don't take themselves too seriously.

Met wonderful, interesting people (hello to Father Bill, Bruce & Yvonne, Jen, Andy, Craig and Gregg, Melissa, Tim & Susan, Chuck, Carl & Karen, Dale, Sean, Franklin, Charles, Dave, Tawndy, Nathan & Marvalinn). Every age group was represented, from teens to 70-somethings, and everything in between. People from all over the US (and Egypt, England, Brazil, Canada and the Philippines as well). Many denominations (and non-denoms) across the spectrum--Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Evangelical Covenant, Episcopal, Pentecostal.

Most of us who attended the conference are probably at the point of "input overload," while at the same time feeling like we've been in an information blackout regarding the aftermath of hurricane Katrina as it has unfolded over the past few days. I am shocked by the reports of devastation, and pray God's mercy to be extended to all those affected. May God intervene directly from on high. May the Lord also work through the hands of his followers, who seek to show mercy and kindness in the powerful name of Jesus. Shalom, shalom.

This song for Palm Sunday allows the congregation to participate in joyfully welcoming Jesus as King.

The song opens with the chorus—the men sing the first line, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord," then the women echo that acclamation, singing the same words but with a different melody. These two lines are then repeated. This format (acclamation, echo, acclamation, echo) is used each time the chorus is sung. When the chorus is sung at the end of the song, there is an additional unison line of "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord."
